any advice on hunting song dogs in the timber?
subgenius asked:
There are coyotes everywhere around southern Oregon. I see there tracks and hear them howl. However I have never been able to call one in. I live just west of Crater Lake. On the other side of the lake there is some desert where I have had success.(a tank of gas away) However I can't seem to bag a timber dog. Are they smarter? I have even caught them with snares, but I really want to call them in. I know about wind and so forth. There is just not much open ground except power line trails and private property. Any advice would be appreciated.

Why would you want to hurt – even kill these dogs? Sounds weird…bag a timber dog. Aren’t there other okay hunting things like for food — try fishing!

If is legal to use a recorded sound effect, I would suggest using one of those. They are very effective here where I live and you get great results while keeping your hands free and eyes open.

Electronic callers are best if legal. Mine is old but I had it retro fitted with remote control on/off and volume.I use a mojo dove with cloth wings only two inches off the ground for motion. I also try to keep a piece of roadkill on hand.
The setup works like this. Hide the caller near a clearing set the motion decoy within a few yards lay the roadkill down there. Now back off downwind about100-150yds. With good view of decoy and roadkill. I usually shoot the dog between the decoy and myself as it is trying to get downwind on the decoy. Hope this helps. Good Hunting.

I personally don’t agree with hunting coyotes.Granted, if I find a
domestic canine in my woods,I shoot it,only to protect my game animals. But, I love hearing the coyotes.
