Buffalo Hunts
Bison, who are often mistakenly called Buffalo, are the largest terrestrial land mammal in North American. Adult male bison can stand up to 6 1/2 feet tall and weight between 1800 to 2000 pounds. A trophy bison can weight close to 2500 pounds. As mentioned before, Bison are also called buffalo, although they are not part of a true buffalo family species.
Predominate found in the Great Plains of the United States, buffalo can also be found in parts of Canada and Europe. Note that the U.S. based species are known as "American Bison", while those found in Europe are called "European Bison". Both species were hunted close to extinction during the 19th and 20th century. The American bison has rebounded back, but the European bison is still classified as endangered.
Bison are social animals that generally live in herds. Each herd is led by a dominant bull who will challenge any rival male who tries to enter the herd or mate with a female of the herd. During mating season, bulls will display a significant amount of competitive aggression towards rival males. Due to their enormous size and aggressive nature, fights for dominance or mating rights between two adult bulls often ends in injury, or in some cases, death.
Although not generally known to attack humans, bison are among the most dangerous animals encountered by visitors to the various U.S. National Parks, especially Yellowstone National Park. Statistics from the U.S. Park Service indicate that, between 1978 and 1992, over four times as many people in Yellowstone National Park were killed or injured by bison as by bears. During that time period, bison accounted for 56 injuries or fatalities compared to 12 by bears. Bull bison are extremely protective of their herd, and will attack humans if they feel their herd is being threatened. Due to their large size and semi-lethargic behavior, bison may appear to be slow and uncoordinated. However, they can run at speeds up to 35 mph in short bursts and are agile enough to jump over a three to four feet fence.
Due to their size, healthy bison face few natural predators aside from a mature brown bear or large pack of wolves. Young calves and newborns are at risk from other smaller predators like coyotes or bobcats. As long as the young or sick stay within the safety of the herd, the bull and or females will offer some form of protection.
Bison are very large animals with extremely thick hides. They will require a large caliber rifle round so they can be taken cleanly. Most shots will be taken at some distance, so make sure that you have practiced so you are proficient at longer ranges. Although its challenging, bison can also be hunted with a bow. Bison make amazing trophies and their hides are second to none of terms of softness and warmth.
