Turkey Hunts
The wild turkey has become one of the most sought after game birds in the US. Native to North and South America, the wild turkey is considered a very elusive game animal. They possess excellent eyesight that keys on movement and a high degree of caution. Turkeys are generally still hunted using a calling technique to lure the bird into range. Male turkey's are larger than females and can grow to nearly 40 lbs. According to data provided by the National Wildlife Turkey Federation, the largest wild turkey ever taken weighed just over 38 lbs.
In most states, either sex can be taken during hunting season, but the males of the species is generally pursued more. Males possess a form of modified feathers that hang down from their chest area called a beard. The longer the beard, the better the bird. Male turkeys also have long spurs on the backs of their feet that are used to defend their territory from rival males.
Turkeys have a number of predators including wolves, coyotes, bears, and bobcats.
Turkeys are generally hunted using a shotgun, although some states also allow bow hunting or rifle hunting. Most hunts will involve the hunter and guide locating an area with turkey sign. The hunter and guide will then take up a ground blind and then initiate some calling. Male turkeys are very territorial and may come to defend their turf or they may be seeking additional females for their flock. It takes a great deal of skill to call a wily turkey into range.
