What is a good cheap rifle?

M.P.M asked:

Hey im 15 years old and i hunt with my dad. I hunt deer, coyote, duck, geese, caribou and this year is my second moose hunt. I use a 270. for all the game but the birds. I want to get a second gun for the varmint. What is a good cheap gun and what is a good scope to put on it. I am thinking of a 204. ruger or a 22-250

remington arimaster 77. it comes with a kit, with bullets and targets and stuff. i took out a bird in one shot, no pain, it just died right away. i am trying to kill a annoying groundhog right now.

    only $80, i got mine for 179.99

I’d go with the 243 too, ammuntion is easy to find and they are a nice all around balance gun. I picked up a browning 243 at one of our local gun dealers off of his consignment rack – cheap. I prefer bolt action guns too with a decent scope – what I think is good may be junk to others and too cheap for some too – it’s relative to what you can afford and feel comfortable with. Brand names matter though …

Remington, Mossberg, Savage,Marlin and Weatherby make nice affordable bolt actions, which is what I prefer, I think you can buy a Marlin or Mossberg for right at $300. H&R makes a nice single shot with a heavy bull barrel, but it probably costs what the bolt actions I mentioned do. I love the .22-250, I’d go with it over the .204, excellent varmint caliber. For a good cheap scope, I’d recommend a Simmons, I’ve had a couple and liked them a lot, skip the Bushnell’s they’re junk, or get a Leupold Rifleman, which costs about $200, good luck

    17 Fireball
    17 HMR
    22 WMR

are all good 100 yard varmint rounds
I presume your talking cat sized animals

I use the 17 HMR in a Marlin with a $70 scope from wallyworld

Get an H&R 1871 rifle chambered in .223.

The varmint hunting world uses .223, or 22-250 as the most common bullets. I like the .223, because it is all the speed you need. Also the ammo is widely available, and can be bought in bulk.

The 22-250 is the king of the varmints, but is expensive to shoot.

The .204 is an awsome bullet, but does not perfore so much better that I can justify the extra expense of ammo.

The gun will run you about 200 dollars, and can be rebarreled for about 100 dollars in an array of calibers. This leaves lots of room in the budget for a good scope.

One gun, low cost, super versitile, and can be the last gun you buy.
They shoot well. I own one, and have 3 calibers.

    Good luck

Savage has a budget line called the Stevens 200 in about any calibre you’d like to shoot. They run about $200 brand new. As far as I know, the only thing that isn’t great about them, is that the trigger is a little stiff.

Stevens makes a relatively cheap .223

I like a .223 Remington cartridge. It is cheap and you will find it everywhere.
Hard to go wrong with a Savage Model 110. I have seen them priced at Wal-Mart for about $360 to $400 with a scope.
Remember you can buy this yet so get your Dad to help you out.

A New England Firearms Handi Rifle would be a good start. They can be bought for around 300$. A few friends of mine have this gun and really like it. If you want to spend a little more and get a bolt action, Remington SPS Varmint is an excellent choice. I just bought one a few weeks ago in 204 ruger and its a real shooter.
3 shots at one hundred yards can be covered with a dime. This gun will run you about 550$. As for scopes I had a Tasco 6-24 power scope on a previous 204 and although the clarity of the glass is poor on high power it seemed to hold zero fine. It might not be the best scope for a heavy recoiling rifle but the 204 did not affect it. They are cheap at around 100$ and you wont find anything in that power range cheaper. Put on a better scope later on if you like.

for moose a 22-250 or a 204 is too small a .30-06 or a .308 is a much better weapon because you can kill bigger game with it as well as small game.

if you reload a 264 win mag does alot of differant rounds good speed the bullet range fron 85gr. to 168 gr. deer fall into 110-120gr depending on your skill 85 gr . is flat and hot 127 gr.-168 -well if it walks in the lower 48 no problem pull up a good reloading book and see for yourself recoil is very low

When talking about guns, good and cheap do not go hand in hand. But a GOOD one would be the new Remington 700 VTR in .204. a good scope would be a Sightron Big Sky II 3-12×42.
